Company History

In 1977 Paul Wilson started the Wood Mill in Livermore Falls, Maine. Paul was a machinist by trade, and he quickly became talented at operating and working on planing machines. The Wood Mill was strictly a service company, providing planing services to a number of businesses throughout Maine and particularly in the log home industry.

In 1987 Mychael Bartholf, a steel worker with no background in the wood industry, purchased a portable sawmill to saw custom lumber for local builders and high end pine flooring manufacturers. This custom sawing business would soon be known as Wood Idea. Word of Myke’s exceptional wide pine boards spread and through hard work and dedication, Myke became one of the only sawyers specializing in top quality, knot free Eastern White Pine boards in America. In 1991, Wood Idea began selling its own, soon-to-be-famous, wide pine flooring, with the widest board being offered measuring in at 20″! In order to make this unique product, Myke sent his boards to various kilns to be dried, then sent them over to the Wood Mill to have them milled into high quality flooring.

By 1999 Wood Idea had expanded to the point where the company was able to involve more of the manufacturing process. To do this, Myke wanted to create a premier facility for drying and milling wide pine flooring. This process began by purchasing The Wood Mill, and soon after he had two dry kilns built. which are used for drying our wide planks as well as other lumber products. With the addition of the kilns, Myke was able to control the entire flooring process, which allowed him to produce the highest quality imaginable, with unmatched consistency.

In 2012 Myke and his wife Sue were ready to retire. Wood Idea and The Wood Mill were sold to Bjarki Gunnarsson and Josh Saltmarsh, two young men who shared Myke’s vision of creating the best pine floors available. Planing is still done by Nate Lesperance, the Mill manager and employee of over 22 years. Myke has taken on an advisory roll in the company and he still enjoys lending his expertise when selecting the logs used in the production of our knot-free, select grade floors. The Gunnarsson-Saltmarsh purchase officially combined the sister companies under one name and turned it into the company you know today: The Wood Mill of Maine.
